Statewide Independent Living Council

The New Mexico Statewide Independent Living Council (NM SILC) is a statewide catalyst, promoting independent living.

Empowering persons with disabilities in New Mexico… The New Mexico Statewide Independent Living Council (NM SILC) is one of the federally mandated SILCs covering every state and territory of the U.S. It is authorized under Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended.

The mission of the NM SILC includes a philosophy of consumer control, peer support, self-help, self-determination, equal access and individual and system advocacy, in order to maximize opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and the integration and full inclusion of individuals with disabilities into the mainstream of society.

Announcements and Current Issues

For questions or inquiries regarding the New Mexico SILC please contact the Executive Director, Kathy Cooper at kathy@disability-revolution.com.

Important Issues: Additional funding is needed for Centers for Independent Living to cover all counties. These five counties in New Mexico still need Independent Living Services coverage – Hidalgo, Catron, Curry, Quay and Roosevelt.

New Mexicans with Disabilities Unmet Needs Survey and Information

NM SILC works closely with all Centers for Independent Living (CILs) in New Mexico and is conducting this survey. CILs are non-profit organizations that provide services and support to people with all types of disabilities. They believe that people with disabilities can live, work and participate fully in their communities and be in charge of their own lives. There are 5 CILs across New Mexico. Some of these CILs have offices in multiple towns. More information about New Mexico CILs will be provided at the end of this introduction.

This survey and information provided has two goals:

  1. To gain valuable information about what you need so that NM SILC and CILs across the state can work to enhance programs and improve the services they provide now for New Mexicans who have disabilities.
  2. To give you, as a person or the family member of a person with a disability and/or chronic health condition, information about CILs, the services they have available and where you can go in your area to get help from a CIL.

Take our Survey

Thank you for your interest in our survey and finding out more about services available in your area to support people with disabilities. We want to hear directly from people who have disabilities, their family members, caregivers and other stakeholders. It should take about 5 minutes, at most, to complete.

If you have questions or would like an alternate format contact Kathy at kathy@disability-revolution.com.
